The village appellation covers a wide spread of ground, from the deep alluvial soils on the flat east of the road, through the mid-slope parcels below the premier crus, up to the cooler, stonier land in the Combe de Lavaux behind the village. The wines are the most robust of the Côte de Nuits: dark fruited, firm and tannic when young, with a savoury, meaty depth that emerges with age.
