Taillepieds sits high on the slope above the village, on very thin soil over fractured limestone, with a steep gradient and sharp drainage; the name is generally taken to refer to the stones underfoot. It is among the most structured of the Volnay premier crus, more mineral and tightly wound than Caillerets or Champans, and it usually needs several years to unwind.
