The region runs along the Duero on the high Castilian plateau, and the altitude, with its wide swings between day and night temperatures, is what keeps freshness in a thick-skinned grape grown in a hot, dry summer. Unlike Vega Sicilia, the other legendary estate of the region, Pesquera uses no Bordeaux varieties here: the Reserva is pure Tinta del País. The fruit comes from the oldest plantings, and the team has been known to drop as much as half the crop on the vine to concentrate what remains.
