That harder, shallower rock gives a leaner and more sharply citrus expression of Chardonnay, built on acidity rather than texture, and it is a wine made to be drunk in its first few years. The north of the district around Maligny is the coolest and most frost-prone part of Chablis, so yields can swing hard from one harvest to the next.
