Sweeter champagne was the norm in the nineteenth century, when the wines shipped to Russia and much of Europe carried a great deal of sugar, and the style survives for the dessert course and for those who simply prefer it. Pol Roger's version, called Rich, uses the same three grapes as its Brut Réserve, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, and comes from the same cellars beneath Épernay, where the house has been established since 1849.
