The Coal River Valley sits in the rain shadow of the hills around Hobart, making it one of the driest and sunniest corners of Tasmania, yet the island's cool maritime climate keeps ripening slow and acidity high. Pinot Noir is the island's signature red grape and the backbone of the Pooley range. The fruit is fermented in small open vats with gentle handling, and the wine is matured in French oak barrel with a modest proportion of new wood so that the site's bright acidity and fine tannin lead.
