The area was celebrated in the nineteenth century, when northern Piedmont had far more vineyard than the Barolo hills, then all but vanished after phylloxera and the pull of the Biella textile mills drew people away from the land. Proprietà Sperino was brought back at the end of the 1990s by Paolo De Marchi, better known for Isole e Olena in Tuscany, and is now run by his son Luca. The wines are made in a deliberately traditional manner, with long macerations and ageing in large wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDecant, then serve at cool room temperature with roast or braised meat, mushrooms or aged alpine cheese.
