Contrary to a common assumption it is not named after Touriga Nacional, although that variety accounts for roughly thirty per cent of the planting. The remainder is a mix of the best Douro varieties, including Touriga Franca, about twenty per cent Tinto Cão from sixty-year-old vines, Tinta Roriz and some Sousão, with an average vine age of around fifty years. Yields are minuscule, near 15 hectolitres per hectare, and the bunches are small and tightly packed.
