It was developed in the nineteenth century by Dona Antónia Ferreira, the most celebrated figure in the history of the region, and was bought by the Symington family in 1989. Unusually for a port of this standing it is declared as a single quinta rather than blended across several, and it is still made in the old way, with the grapes trodden by foot in granite lagares before fortification. The steep schist terraces are planted largely to Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca.
