It is home to the estate's oldest vines, up to 80 years of age and mostly on their own rootstock, and although Wilhelm Weil could release Grosses Gewächs from more than one site he has chosen to draw it from here alone. The aim is to recreate the style, quality and scale of the full-bodied dry Rheingau Rieslings of a century ago, when the region's best wines were among the most expensive in the world. The greater proportion of loess and loam in the Gräfenberg soils adds a textural dimension that the Turmberg and Klosterberg wines do not have.
