En Auvonnes lies on the lower part of the slope near the D974, on the boundary between Marsannay and Couchey, where dense marl is scattered with cailloux calcaires — limestone stones that encourage the faintly reductive, flinty character the wine is known for. Pépé is French shorthand for grandfather, and the vines here were planted by Armand Pataille some ninety years ago in the Aligoté Doré selection, the low-yielding, better-quality cultivar. The tiny parcel makes only a few barrels.
