The idea was to blend Sangiovese, the grape of Montalcino, with Merlot, which had no history there, and to bottle the result outside the Brunello rules. The estate lies on the southern side of the Montalcino hill, on clay and the crumbling schist known in Tuscany as galestro, across a range of altitudes. The two varieties are picked and vinified separately before blending and ageing in French oak. Frescobaldi took full ownership in the mid 2000s.
