Negre is roughly seventy-five per cent Garnacha and twenty-five per cent Cariñena, the balance that was standard here before the modern revival brought in Bordeaux varieties and new oak. A good share of the Garnacha is grown high in the Montsant ranges on clay-limestone soils, while the remainder of the fruit comes from vines on the slate and schist llicorella that gives Priorat its savoury mineral signature. Fermentation is whole-cluster with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is then aged for six months in a 5,000-litre concrete tank, so there is no oak character at all. It is the estate's most accessible bottling and a clear statement of intent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eApproachable now and good over eight to ten years.
