It was founded by Sam Neill in 1993, with a first vineyard at Gibbston. Fruit for this release was picked by hand between late March and mid-April, almost entirely destemmed, and given a cold soak before fermentation and more time on skins afterwards. Maturation took ten months in one- to four-year-old French barriques with barely any new oak, keeping the wine fresh and fruit-led.
