The Montbrison vineyard occupies a gentle southwest-facing slope where shallow clay and limestone soil is thick with surface stone. Maison Verget was founded in Mâcon in 1990 by the Belgian-born Jean-Marie Guffens, who set out to apply Côte d'Or standards of selection and barrel work to Mâconnais fruit, and the house buys from long-standing grower partners. This bottling comes from vines over forty years old. Only free-run juice was used and fermentation took place entirely in wood, with about 25 per cent new oak. Guffens is the source of the line that no wine is over-oaked, only under-fruited, and the seasoning here is judged to sit behind the fruit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReady on release and good for five or six years, it suits roast chicken, grilled fish or a creamy gratin.
