Vines ripen later here, and for most of the twentieth century the appellation was regarded as marginal; warmer growing seasons have turned it into one of the more rewarding corners of Burgundy for honestly priced Pinot Noir. The bedrock is the same Jurassic limestone and marl that runs beneath the grands crus, though the soils are thinner and stonier.
