The estate was founded in 1868 by the French count Théodore de La Tour, who brought French grape varieties and winemaking methods to the area. It is now run as a foundation, with the proceeds of the estate supporting a children's charity. The Collio's soil, a layered marl and sandstone known locally as ponca, is the defining feature of its wines.
