The cuvée is named for the cadastral title of its site, Au Château, a lieu-dit that lies a short walk from the western boundary of the Schlossberg Grand Cru; the château whose ruins overlook the town gives the vineyard its name. The vines were planted in the 1960s, before clonal selection took hold, and sit on steep terraces of granitic soil. Eddy Faller describes the granite as giving a more linear, smoky and mineral style than the rounder, more supple Altenbourg bottling raised on limestone. Fermentation included 20 per cent whole bunches, and the wine was then aged for two years in Burgundian barrels, of which 20 per cent were new.
