Alberto Oggero Roero Anime Nebbiolo 2023

Roero Anime is the deepest and most structured Nebbiolo in Alberto Oggero's range, from old vines in an amphitheatre-shaped site at Santo Stefano Roero.

Roero DOCG occupies the sandy left bank of the Tanaro, where Nebbiolo is generally lighter and more aromatic than in the Langhe. Anime is the exception in Oggero's cellar: the site's shape and its south-westerly exposure hold the sun into the evening, and the very old vines root deep into intensely sandy soil, so the vineyard rarely suffers extreme water stress even in dry years. The wine shares its winemaking with Le Coste—hand-picked fruit, maceration on skins, then large oak casks followed by a spell in concrete—but comes out darker and more intensely textured, with more grip through the middle. Production is small. It is the bottling to choose from this estate for those who want Nebbiolo with complexity and depth rather than immediate charm.

Give it a year or two, or decant on release; it should hold for a decade. Serve at 16–18°C with braised veal, game birds or aged hard cheese.
