Description
Roero Le Coste comes from Alberto Oggero's grandfather's vineyard in Santo Stefano Roero and is the most traditionally styled Nebbiolo in the range.
Roero DOCG sits opposite the Langhe across the Tanaro, on ancient marine sands that give Nebbiolo a paler colour, finer tannin and an earlier drinking window than Barolo. Le Coste is the exception among Oggero's sites in carrying a higher proportion of clay, which lends the wine depth, and its 30-year-old guyot-pruned vines face south, making this his brightest and most reliably ripe parcel whatever the season. The result is closer in shape to a classic Nebbiolo d'Alba, but with the sandy Roero signature still clearly stamped on it. Hand-picked fruit spent 25 days on skins with a wild fermentation in steel, followed by 14 months in Slavonian oak tonneau and a further year in bottle at the winery before release, so the wine arrives already partly resolved.
Drinking well now and should hold for another eight years. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, agnolotti or aged Castelmagno.
