Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Cottà comes from a micro-parcel of 50-year-old vines in one of the first Neive sites ever bottled as a single vineyard.
Cottà is among the great crus of Neive and was one of the earliest vineyards in Barbaresco to be released under its own name. The Rocca family works a very small holding in the middle of the south-west-facing slope, next to their Gepin parcel of Barbera and looking across at Ronchi. The plot yields no more than about 2,000 bottles a year. Soils here are clay and marl with a high proportion of sand, and the microclimate is warmer than at the family's cooler sites, a combination that gives generous fruit without coarsening the tannins. That generosity suits the elegant, large-cask handling of Nebbiolo the estate has settled on, and the wine tends to show more early charm than Ronchi while keeping the perfume the cru is known for.
Drinkable earlier than the other crus in this range but capable of a decade or more; serve at 16–18°C with veal in the pan, agnolotti del plin or roast duck.
