Description

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino comes from one of the highest and coolest parcels in the appellation.

The Montersino cru lies at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso, at around 320 metres above sea level, which places it among the highest and coolest sites in the appellation. The Rocca family farm a 0.42-hectare parcel there, planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca and facing south. The soils are very poor clay and limestone with thin layers of sandstone running through them, a formation known locally as Formazioni di Lequio; Daniela Rocca has pointed out the resemblance to the soils of Monforte in Barolo and to some of the chalky ground in Serralunga. Sandstone tends to bring finesse rather than power, and the altitude lengthens hang time and firms up the acidity, so Montersino reads as the more delicate and aromatic of the estate's cru wines. Vinification follows the house pattern of extended skin contact and maturation in large Stockinger botti.

Approachable after a few years and capable of a decade or more; serve at 16-18°C with roast guinea fowl, agnolotti del plin or aged Toma.
