Description
Armand Heitz Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens comes from the vineyard widely held to be the finest in Pommard and a long standing candidate for grand cru status.
The name comes from the colour of the ground: rugiens, for the reddish iron rich clay that runs through this part of the slope at the Volnay end of the commune. The vineyard divides into Rugiens-Hauts above and Rugiens-Bas below, the latter being the portion most often proposed for elevation to grand cru, and wines from here are counted among the longest lived of the Côte de Beaune. Growers have made the case for that promotion for the better part of a century. Armand Heitz took over his family's vines in the 2010s and farms organically, with a regenerative approach that brings livestock, trees and hedgerows back into the vineyards.
This needs patience, and a decade is not too much; when opened it should be decanted and served at cellar temperature with roast or braised red meat.
