Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perrière comes from 0.35 hectares directly beneath the Mazis-Chambertin grand cru, on some of the oldest bedrock in the village.

La Perrière sits high on the Gevrey slope just under Mazis, where the limestone mother rock is close to the surface and the topsoil is thin and stony. It is a small vineyard and much divided between owners, so single-domaine bottlings are rare and the wine is seldom seen in Australia. Mortet's holding is split across two little parcels of very rocky ground. The name refers to the old quarries that once worked this band of stone, and the wines it gives tend to be firm and mineral rather than plush, with the perfume Gevrey shows at the northern end of the appellation. Arnaud Mortet fermented this with about 30% whole bunches and raised it in 30% new oak, a restrained regime by the standards the estate once kept, aimed at keeping the fruit and the site in the foreground.

Give it five years or decant it young. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck breast or hard alpine cheese.
