Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières 2018

Les Hautes Maizières is a Vosne-Romanée lieu-dit that has long produced wine of premier cru quality, and the domaine's vines here average sixty years of age.

The parcel sits just below Les Suchots and Échezeaux and right beside the Clos de Vougeot, which is about as good an address as a village-level site can have. Arnoux-Lachaux farms just 0.6 hectares. The soil here is rich in iron, and the domaine notes that it gives more depth and perfume than the parcels that go into its blended Vosne-Romanée; that shows in an intensely perfumed, mineral-flecked wine with deep fruit and a firm, powdery frame. Charles Lachaux has reshaped viticulture at the estate around taller canopies, later harvesting and a light touch in the cellar, with whole bunches used and extraction kept gentle so the fruit and site come through clearly.

Give it four to six years and it will hold well beyond; serve at 16-18°C with roast game birds, beef or a soft washed-rind cheese.
