Description
Bannockburn 1314 Pinot Noir is a savoury Pinot Noir from Geelong's Moorabool Valley.
The close-planted blocks that feed a good share of this wine are now certified organic, which matters more than it sounds, because densely planted vines compete hard, crop low and need careful farming to stay healthy. Fruit also comes off plantings from 1976, 1997 and 2007. Most of it was destemmed, twenty per cent went in as whole bunches, and a carbonic portion was included for aromatic lift, all fermented wild. Twenty per cent new Tronçais oak was used for maturation: tight-grained wood from central France, expensive, and chosen for structure more than flavour.
Dark cherry, forest floor and a peppery edge, with fine-grained tannin and the freshness this estate rarely loses. Serve lightly chilled, 14 to 16 degrees. Duck breast, a mushroom and thyme pasta, roast pork, or a plate of jamón all work well.
