Bannockburn 1314 Rosé 2023

Bannockburn 1314 Rosé is a Geelong rosé led by Cabernet Sauvignon.

From its second year the blend changed shape. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot took over with Shiraz in support, because the estate has some good old Cabernet and Merlot vines sitting on the Winery Block and Matt Holmes wanted to use them. This release runs seventy per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest split evenly between Merlot and Shiraz, off vines planted in 1981, 1990 and 1996 on organically farmed clay over limestone. Perfectly ripe fruit was pressed gently on a white-wine cycle, fermented cool and slow in stainless steel, and left on lees in tank before a July bottling.

Juicy, full and fleshy, bursting with summer berries and cassis, with savoury tones layered underneath and a lick of minerality on the close. There is real weight here. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees alongside spiced chicken, grilled haloumi, lamb koftas, or a Vietnamese salad.
