Bannockburn 1314 Shiraz 2016

Bannockburn 1314 Shiraz is a mature, medium-bodied Geelong Shiraz made for the table.

The Range vineyard, planted in 1974, is where this estate started, and a portion of declassified fruit from it goes into this wine alongside the bulk from the Winery Block of the early 1990s. Only the third Shiraz ever released under the second label, it was hand-picked, fermented naturally with twenty per cent whole bunches and left a month on skins before spending a year in French oak hogsheads, chiefly Remond from Ladoix-Serrigny. No fining, minimal filtration, then a long rest in bottle. The label takes its name from the 1314 battle, though the wine itself is aimed squarely at lunch.

Savoury, peppery and fragrant with redcurrant, and the palate follows the nose closely: medium-bodied, fine and ready to go. Serve at 16 degrees. Put it with a steak sandwich, lamb skewers, a lentil and sausage braise, or a wedge of cheddar.
