Bannockburn 1314 Shiraz 2024

Bannockburn 1314 Shiraz is a fresh, spice-driven Shiraz from the estate's Winery Block in Geelong.

Shiraz made a few cameos in this range over the years before becoming a permanent fixture from 2024. Vine age is doing much of the work, since the fruit comes off Winery Block plantings from 1990 and 1996, which is old for a wine at this price. Picking happened early enough to land at 13.5 per cent potential alcohol, with freshness the priority. The fruit was destemmed and fermented on skins for a week before pressing to mostly older hogsheads, a tenth of them new, for eight months. Clay over limestone, organic farming, and a cellar that treats the second label with the same care as the first.

Bright in colour, complex and spice-laden on the nose, then deep and slinky in the mouth without losing its freshness. Perfumed, savoury and crunchy. Serve at 16 degrees with grilled lamb, a mushroom and barley risotto, or duck sausages and lentils.
