Bannockburn Chardonnay 2021

Bannockburn Chardonnay is a taut, estate-grown Chardonnay from Geelong under screwcap.

Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, abuts the S.R.H. parcel and provides the backbone, while the Winery Block from 1981 fills out the rest, and Kelly Lane's Clone 76 has been part of the picture recently. Both older sites lie on volcanic soils over limestone clays, with vines averaging around thirty-five years, old enough to crop lightly and ripen slowly. Whole bunches were pressed and settled overnight, then wild-fermented mainly in 500-litre French oak hogsheads with a fifth new. Seventy per cent went through malolactic, and the wine sat ten months on lees with no stirring at all.

Lemon, grapefruit pith and white peach over a chalky, saline base, with lees weight and a long dry finish. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees and give it half an hour in the glass. Try it with roast chicken, scallops, gnocchi with burnt butter, or a washed-rind cheese.
