Description
Bannockburn Chardonnay is a striking Geelong Chardonnay taken through complete malolactic conversion.
Full malolactic is the change worth noting, and it does not soften the wine the way you might expect, because the acid at this site is robust enough to absorb it. Fruit came from Olive Tree Hill of 1976, the Winery Block of 1981, Stuart Block of 1997, the close-planted Grigsby of 2007 and Kelly Lane of 2016, planted to P58 and Bernard 76, 95 and 96 at varying spacings. All the sites are organically farmed on volcanic soils over limestone clays. Whole bunches went to press, the juice fermented naturally in French hogsheads and puncheons with a quarter new, then ten months on lees with no stirring.
Chalk and flint underpin stone fruit and citrus, with a nutty, doughy richness, saturating presence, piercing acid and a precise, lengthy close. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees. Good with a whole roasted chicken, scallops in butter, or a slab of aged gruyère.
