Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz 2012

Bannockburn De La Roche Shiraz is a single-vineyard, whole-bunch Shiraz from a high-density block at the estate.

Lucas Grigsby and Michael Glover planted De La Roche in 2007 on higher ground above the De La Terre Pinot block, effectively a westerly extension of Serré. The original plot ran to just 0.8 hectares, and the name points at the volcanic rock scattered across its soil. The Shiraz came from cuttings taken at Best's and Tahbilk, set on a mix of rootstock and own roots. Glover had recently done a vintage at Château de la Tour in Burgundy, and it shaped his approach here: pick riper, press earlier, and chase a little more flesh and accessibility out of a fully whole-bunch ferment. This is a museum release, held back and opened up by years in the estate's cellar.

Layered and shifting, with dark fruit, wild herb and the stemmy, peppery spice a full whole-bunch ferment gives, and tannins now fully resolved. Decant it and serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Roast lamb with rosemary, braised beef short rib, or a mature cheddar.
