Bannockburn Gamay 2023

Bannockburn Gamay is a single-barrel Geelong Gamay, the second release from the estate’s grafted block.

Grafting an acre of the home vineyard across to Gamay in 2019 took some deliberation — no new variety had gone into this ground since 1980. At 1.4 acres, the block sits beneath the Olive Tree Hill Pinot and below the S.R.H. rows, on limestone with clay subsoils, and it catches strong afternoon sun in warmer years. Matt Holmes went to Fleurie to work a vintage with Grégoire Hoppenot before committing. Hand-picked fruit fermented spontaneously by whole-bunch carbonic maceration, came off the stems, and finished in a single-use barrique, resting ten months. One barrel, as in 2022.

Juicy and light on its feet: red currant, violets, pink pepper, and a whisper of the estate’s savoury character underneath. Serve cool, 13 to 14 degrees. Charcuterie, roast chicken, or pasta with sausage and fennel.
