Bannockburn Gamay 2024

Bannockburn Gamay is a small-batch Geelong Gamay, the third release and the first with enough volume to go round.

Warmth is what this corner of the property offers, with intense afternoon sun in the better seasons, and that suits a variety with a reputation for being awkward outside Beaujolais. The 1.4-acre plot sits on limestone under clay, below the Olive Tree Hill Pinot rows and downslope from S.R.H., grafted over in 2019 as the first new variety on the estate since 1980. Matt Holmes worked a harvest in Beaujolais before putting the wine out. Whole-bunch carbonic maceration ran about eight days, the stems came off, and a single-use barrique carried the wine for ten months.

Densely packed for its weight, with blue fruit, pink peppercorn and a floral, herbal lift over the estate’s savoury base. Drink it at 13 to 14 degrees. Duck sausages, a charcuterie board, or grilled quail.
