Description
Bannockburn Grigsby Chardonnay is a single-block, certified organic Chardonnay from Geelong’s Moorabool Valley.
This was the first wine released on its own from the estate’s close-planted organic Chardonnay block: Bernard clone 76, rows 1.2 metres apart with a metre between vines, running north-south over dark cracking clay on weathered basalt and limestone. The Bernard material was brought in by Lucas Grigsby and Matt Holmes to widen a clonal palette that began almost entirely with Penfolds selections. A small, clean crop in 2021 was whole-bunch pressed, settled overnight and racked to two second-use French hogsheads for a wild ferment; one barrel went through malolactic, and the wine sat eleven months on lees with barely any stirring.
Chalky tension is the signature here, with white peach and lemon pith in place of butter, and a saline, drawn-out finish. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees in a white Burgundy glass. Roast chicken, seared scallops, or a gruyère tart.
