Bannockburn Grigsby Chardonnay 2022

Bannockburn Grigsby Chardonnay is a certified organic single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Moorabool Valley.

Lucas Grigsby has managed these vineyards for 35 years, longer than many Australian wineries have existed, and the wine carries his name. The block was grafted over from Shiraz in 2018 and planted to Bernard clone 76 at close spacing — 1.2-metre rows, one metre between vines, north-south — on dark cracking clay above weathered basalt and limestone. Whole bunches were pressed and settled overnight, then racked to hogsheads with a quarter new for fermentation and 70 per cent malolactic conversion, followed by ten months on lees without stirring. Certified organic, and full of drive.

There is real presence: grapefruit, white nectarine, a struck-match edge, and a chalky grip carrying the finish. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Try it with roast pork, crab linguine, or a wedge of comté.
