Description
Bannockburn Pinot Noir is the estate’s Geelong Pinot Noir, drawn across its vineyards.
The style shifted when Matt Holmes took over: bottling earlier, using fewer whole bunches than his predecessors, and letting organically farmed sites drive the character in place of the cellar. The 2018 came from several blocks planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007, all of them on volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone-clay base. Indigenous yeast did the work with just 20 per cent whole bunches left in the ferment, and the wine spent twelve months mainly in Tronçais and Bertranges hogsheads, a quarter of them new. A quieter approach, and a clearer wine for it.
Red cherry, dried herb and damp earth, medium-bodied, with tannin that stays fine and a long savoury close. Serve at 15 degrees, briefly decanted. Roast chicken with mushrooms, duck confit, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
