Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2021

Bannockburn Pinot Noir is the estate’s benchmark Geelong Pinot Noir, made from every Pinot block on the property.

Vines planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007 all contribute, including the close-planted blocks that usually get bottled on their own. Clonal material is mostly MV6 with Dijon selections 114, 115 and 777 threaded through, and every site sits on volcanic loam and dark clay over limestone. Under Matt Holmes the wine has become less showy and better balanced, the result of organic farming, a measured hand with whole bunches and earlier bottling. Most of the 2021 was destemmed and fermented on wild yeast with 20 per cent bunches retained, then given ten months in Tronçais hogsheads, 25 per cent new. Sealed under screwcap.

Poised more than plush, and the better for it: red cherry, blood orange and wild herbs, with a savoury earthiness and fine chalky tannin. Serve at 15 degrees. Duck, roast quail, or a mushroom and lentil pie.
