Description
Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a Geelong Pinot Noir grown on volcanic and limestone soils.
Soil does the heavy lifting: volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base, across blocks planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007, the close-planted sites included. MV6 dominates the clonal picture, with Dijon selections 114, 115 and 777 in support. Everything was picked by hand and fermented block by block, 20 per cent whole bunches overall plus a small carbonic portion, then pressed to hogsheads and puncheons — a fifth of them new — for ten months before the blend was assembled. Nothing in the handling pushes the wine past where the vineyard wants to sit.
Bright red fruit, earthy savour woven through it, fruit tannin with real grip and a supple middle. A sweet-and-sour note on the close hints at what age will bring. Serve at 15 degrees. Duck, pork belly, or roast mushrooms.
