Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2023

Bannockburn Pinot Noir is a Geelong Pinot Noir from a short, high-quality vintage.

Four blocks form the backbone — Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, 10 Rows from 1991, Stuart Block from 1997 and Anns Block from 2004 — and in 2023 close-planted De La Terre fruit joined them, since yields were too small to bottle that block on its own. The crop was down about half on an already lean 2022. Volcanic loam and dark clay over limestone runs beneath the lot, planted mainly to MV6. Parcels fermented separately with roughly 20 per cent bunches and a little carbonic, then had ten months in hogsheads and puncheons, one fifth of them new.

Ready straight away: pure red fruit, florals, and the estate’s savoury signature underneath, with tannin that barely gets in the way. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled salmon, or a mushroom risotto.
