Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay 2017

Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay is the estate’s top white, from twelve rows of old vines in Geelong.

Clone P58, the old Penfolds selection, was planted in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard in 1976, and the twelve rows that make this wine are the oldest Chardonnay on the property. They are own-rooted and dry-grown, set over the ancient marine sediment that forms the bedrock through this part of the Moorabool Valley. The method here changes very little from year to year: whole-bunch pressing, a wild ferment in French hogsheads, and a long rest on lees without stirring, so the site and not the cellar sets the tone.

Nothing showy here: a mineral, tightly drawn Chardonnay, with citrus, white peach, struck match, and a saline finish that grips. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled crayfish, or a plate of hard cheese.
