Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay 2018

Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay is a single-block Chardonnay from Geelong’s Moorabool Valley.

Cool, dry conditions in the Moorabool Valley let this variety ripen slowly and hold its acidity, and the twelve rows behind the wine take full advantage. Planted in 1976 in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard to clone P58, own-rooted and never irrigated, they sit above ancient marine sediment, the source of the salinity that marks the label. The initials belong to founder Stuart Reginald Hooper. Handling is consistent and restrained: bunches pressed whole, a wild ferment in French hogsheads, and months on lees with no stirring.

Linear and saline in shape, with lemon, white nectarine and a subtle leesy depth beneath. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees and let it warm a little in the glass. Good with roast fish, chicken, or gruyère.
