Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay 2019

Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay is the estate’s top white, from its oldest Chardonnay rows in Geelong.

Twelve rows, one block, one clone: P58 planted in 1976 at Olive Tree Hill, own-rooted, dry-grown and low-yielding, on a north-facing rise over ancient marine sediment. The wine honours the estate’s founder, Stuart Reginald Hooper, who chose this ground in the Moorabool Valley when almost nobody was planting in Geelong. Winemaking is intentionally unshowy — whole bunches pressed, wild yeast in French hogsheads, extended lees ageing without stirring — because the point of the wine has always been the ground it grows on.

Austere in the best sense. Concentrated but taut, with grapefruit, white stone fruit, a mineral core and a long saline close. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, seared scallops, or a mushroom and leek tart.
