Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay 2023

Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay is one of Australia’s great single-site Chardonnays, grown in Geelong.

Yields in 2023 barely passed a tonne to the acre across the estate, and on vines this old and this carefully farmed there was never going to be much. Fruit came in over two passes in early March, was pressed as whole bunches and settled overnight, then fermented in French hogsheads with a third new; ten months on lees followed, unstirred, with 65 per cent malolactic conversion. The source is twelve rows of P58 planted in 1976, own-rooted, north-facing with east-west rows, centred in the plot, over ancient marine sediment. Organically farmed.

Pure, taut and linear, with deep-rooted power held in check: citrus, white stone fruit, a saline mineral wash and a long, steady finish. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, scallops, or grilled crayfish.
