Description
Bannockburn S.R.H. Chardonnay is the estate’s emblematic Chardonnay, from vines planted in 1976.
Own-rooted and well established in the centre of the plot, these vines face north with rows running east-west, and they are the oldest Chardonnay at the estate: twelve rows of P58 put in by Stuart Reginald Hooper in 1976. The bedrock is ancient marine sediment, and with each vintage the vines seem to pull more salinity from it. Farming is organic. In 2024 the wine fermented in French hogsheads with 40 per cent new oak, went through malolactic in full, and spent ten months on lees, untouched by a stirring rod.
Coiled and powerful, driven by concentrated citrus and stone fruit with the site’s saline edge cutting through. Unrepentantly linear, and built to age. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken, lobster, or aged gruyère.
