Bannockburn Shiraz 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Bannockburn Shiraz in 1.5-litre magnum is the estate’s Geelong Shiraz in a cellaring format.

Conditions in 2022 were about as good as this district gets, with enough spring rain and then a warm, even ripening run. The Shiraz fermented spontaneously with 10 per cent bunches and a generous carbonic component, spent a fortnight on skins, and went to a mix of French hogsheads and puncheons with 10 per cent new for ten months. Fruit came mostly from the south-facing Winery Block, planted in 1990, and the Range Block from 1974, with some declassified De La Roche in the mix. The soils are volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam on a limestone-clay base.

Mid-weight and silky, with bright berry fruit, root spice, graphite and a sinewy structure beneath. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb cutlets, duck sausages, or a peppered steak — and a magnum will hold for years.
