Description
Bannockburn Shiraz is a cool-climate Shiraz from the estate’s Geelong vineyards.
The backbone is the south-facing Winery Block, planted in 1990, with fruit from the Range Road site put in during 1974 and some declassified De La Roche filling out the blend. Underneath is volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam on a limestone-clay base: poor, stony ground that keeps yields modest and pushes the wine towards savour and away from sweetness. The 2017 fermented on wild yeast with just 10 per cent whole bunches and a fortnight on skins, then was pressed, settled and racked to French oak puncheons, a fifth of them new, for thirteen months.
Savour before sweetness: peppery and taut, with dark plum, olive and iron, and fine-grained tannin through the finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees after a decant. Roast lamb, grilled sausages, or a mushroom and barley stew.
