Bannockburn Shiraz 2018

Bannockburn Shiraz is a savoury, medium-weight Shiraz from Geelong’s Moorabool Valley.

Matt Holmes has been feeding carbonic fruit back into the ferment after five to seven days, alongside a steady reduction in new barrels. His reading is that the mature Winery Block brings savoury character of its own, thanks to clay and limestone, old vines and poor soils, and that this handling lifts the impression of brightness and fruit purity. The 2018 came mainly off that south-facing block, planted in 1990, with Range Road fruit from 1974 and some declassified De La Roche. It fermented wild with 10 per cent whole bunches, spent a fortnight on skins, then thirteen months in French puncheons with 20 per cent new.

Brightness is the whole aim of that carbonic portion. Bright and peppery over a savoury base, with red and black berries, bay leaf, iron and a chalky tannin close. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Lamb, duck, or eggplant with harissa.
