Bannockburn Shiraz 2020

Bannockburn Shiraz is a cool-season Shiraz from the Moorabool Valley in Geelong.

2020 ran cooler than the year before and cropped lightly, which tends to concentrate this site’s leaner, more peppery register. Fruit fermented on wild yeast with 10 per cent whole bunches and a portion of carbonic maceration, spent two weeks on skins, and then twelve months in French hogsheads with 10 per cent new. The blend leans on the south-facing Winery Block from 1990, with some declassified De La Roche from 2007. Volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam above limestone-clay runs beneath both, and Matt Holmes has steadily reduced new wood across the range.

A cool year shows in the frame. Lean-framed and spicy: red plum, cracked pepper, sage and iron, with acidity keeping it brisk. Serve at 16 degrees. Grilled lamb, duck breast, or a plate of charcuterie and olives.
