Description
Bannockburn Shiraz is one of Australia’s more distinctive Shiraz bottlings, grown in Geelong.
Rain and sunshine arrived in good measure in 2021, and the team picked healthy fruit at decent yields. What makes the wine unusual is almost entirely the ground: a south-facing block established in 1990 beside the winery, plus a little declassified De La Roche off the 2007 plantings, on volcanic scoria over basalt, clay and loam above a limestone-clay base. Fermentation ran on indigenous yeast with 10 per cent whole bunches and plenty of carbonic maceration, then two weeks on skins and twelve months in French hogsheads with just 10 per cent new. Holmes keeps pulling the oak further back.
A classic for the site. Savoury depth, root spice and deep graphite-mineral tones, with silky weight and a sinewy frame holding it. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted. Roast lamb, beef short rib, or grilled mushrooms with thyme.
